Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
Well the kit arrived....unboxed it, peered inside...lots and lots of parts!
Working with Samurai on replacing the melamine laser cut parts with aluminum ones. (Melamine is similar to pressure board and after years of dealing with pressure-board furniture in the past....know how bad it can be.)
The 2020 pieces that make up the outer brackets (FT1 and FT2) have been replaced with aluminum versions I bought at Adafruit. I'm sure I could've paid even less via China shops, but I needed a few other thinks from Adafruit anyways.
I bought some Rustoleum Orange paint and started painting the parts. I figure if this will print the big pieces of BB-8, why not have some nice BB-8 coloring! (Plus my Ultimaker Original looks great in Custard Orange!)

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
E3D v6 Nozzle and Titan Extruder (upgrades!)
Went with the nice bundle deal offered by PrintedSolid.com
https://printedsolid.com/collections/bu ... tan-bundle
I could've gone with some silly clone but I prefer sticking to the "real" thing. I also like supporting PrintedSolid, whose always been good to me
I also bought the silicone boots, which seem to fall off a lot, from what I have seen in some other builder's setups.

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
1.75 mm or 3 mm?
I debated about this a bit, wondering if I should opt for 2.85/3 since my Ultimaker uses 2.85 mm filament
I decided to leave it alone with 1.75 mm and replicate the setup I see as being successful on the FT-5: the E3D v6 and Titan combo
Stocking two different filaments...so what? I really don't see it as that big a deal. My vendor carries them both!

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
Igus chainflex wire
Decided to order 8 feet of it.
The kit has nice silicone wire but from what others mention, it can still look like a crazy nest of wires when completed.
This will handle everything minus the heater block

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
you should also order some loctite,
the quality of the parts is not the best, and all the little grub screws keep coming loose

Yes, I agree on Loctite
Which part cooling setup are you using?
A few people like this one (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1746358)
But the preview pics don't seem to match the model? (I see it say "HOT" but not on the model?)

I guess I am still used to the twin Ultimaker fan setup, I tried with a single fan, but saw that cooling was not enough, and too local, now they cool a larger area around the nozzle.
also the stock firmware has tight settings for thermal runaway, and having a fan so close caused total shutdowns all the time,
I could not get the fan above 20% without problems.
But I have noticed that the E3D with Vulcano setup is prone to movement, at the tip, when the nozzle goes over uneven surface while printing,
the print head does not fit very tight inside the Titan extruder, and when there is a small blob during printing the nozzle moves quit a bit, instead of moving through it.
I think I have to create a fan mount that is stronger and connected to the X-axis gantry.
I never got a notice when I asked to be put on the list for the 713Maker parts :/, so I just made them myself
all my melanine parts have now been replaced with alu.

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
Samauri (Dan) has been using Rhino 3D to replace the melanine parts with aluminum ones
713 seems to respond best to messging via their Facebook page

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
More new arrivals: E3D v6 hot end (1.75 mm direct drive), Titan Extruder and ColorFabb 1.75mm filament
All from PrintedSolid.com
I didn't see anything for instructions in the hot end package but the Titan came in a week packaged box and instructions in there. Looks like a trip to their website is in order!
And I had to get filament and being very happy with ColorFabb over the years, I bought my favorite color, Dutch Orange

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
Well despite the bitter cold weather here (28F), I am trying to prime and paint my 2020 aluminum bracket pieces.
With the garage door closed but sunlight streaming in, applying the primer, let sit in sun for an hour...then in the house for two more....then back outside for a coat of Orange paint.

Re: Paul's FT-5 Build
Awaiting Pancake motors!
According to tracking info, they should arrive Thursday.
I went with the pancake since it is lighter than the stepper and other users reported good results with a Titan Extruder and pancake combo
Samurai has made the CAD files to produce the bed pieces in aluminum, so that's coming up next on my To Do list
