I did a piece that the supports were pretty hard to reach after

And I see the Horizontal Offset From Part

Default is 0.5

In previewing, I didn't see much change from that to 4.0 mm.

In this print, where I already removed the support under the dome (it fell out! Love!)...those edges are a bear to clean up

(Yes, supposed to look this way since it only has 2 shells)

I have found a wood burning kit that has a knife blade attachment (and a soldering tip as well). Using the knife blade to slice through the support layers was as easy as cutting soft butter, and as long as I kept moving, didn't melt the surrounding pla. I use this when cleaning up my miniatures which require a lot of minute detail.

I have one of these, it runs from a USB connection, and find it quite good.

The MODIFI3D looks nice but overpriced. I wonder if they only sell the tips and for what price? The device itself is identical to the standard 8W USB soldering iron sold at Ebay for under 5 EUR.

I wonder if that would save me any time on the 27 parts I have extensive Cura support I need to clean up

Using a hot knife of some sort will save you a lot of time and leave you with a fairly clean edge as you cut the supports out (once you get the hang of the tool). Just remember that it will slice any area, not just the supports. Like cutting soft butter. I recommend practicing on a small sample print at first, and use a magnifying lamp for detail work.

With some settings tune up, is quite easy...

The individual tips or the complete set are available on eBay shipped from the UK. For me, shipped to the US the cost is about 25 USD plus the cost of the soldering iron (5 USD), so it is not much of a savings over just buying the Modifi3d kit (31.99 USD + free shipping from one place I found online).

I like the idea though, so I am going to try the Weller battery-powered soldering iron I already have. No cord should make it a bit more convenient, if it works.

And what a sting of a soldering iron? Steel or ceramic? You can also use a hairdryer (dont kow right name, sorry) of soldering station for smoothing artifacts. 150-180 degrees and the average airflow can make wonders.
