Parts needed to refurbish a UM2 print head

Post by nilrog »

I got hold of a used UM2 print head with an Olsson block that I intend to put on my UMO+. Before I put it in the printer I want to refurbish it so that it is as good as new. But i'm not sure what parts I need to buy to complete this operation.

Do I need anything more than these parts? I will mainly print the materials that needs higher temp than regular PLA. But i'm not sure, from following all the discussions, if the I2K isolator is needed/good to have or if it causes more headache than it will try to solve.

I2K can work, but IMO it can be a pain just sometimes, specially because between olsson-i2k-coupler there are microgaps that end full of a brown-goo that can end going to the print. Is not biggie, but for me that I need perfectly clear constant color it was more than an advantage. If you plan to print 260 constant or higher, indeed you need the I2K.

Also if you plan to print that high, the um2 non plus heater is 25W, a 35W will help keep good temps with fans on (if needed).

Ok, thanks!

Not sure I need the I2K then because I don't think I will be printing at that high temps. And I will see if they have the more powerful heater. I'm trying to do all the "good to have" mods now before it will be installed in the printer.

You know I have the UM2 print head I just removed from my UM2....since it is now a [problematic] UM2+ :)

I think I have an Olsson Block...maybe he sent me one to test the ruby nozzle installs, or if it is a regular one

I think the higher power heater would be a good idea

Your UM2+ is destined to have the printhead changer mod so you can print multicolored BB-8 droids ;-) :-)

I'd settle for a successful print (see other thread!)

Since I am in USA, I can reach out gr5 for parts to upgrade the head

You know....I am guessing if I were to upgrade my UMO to the UM2 head, I need the UM2 electronics, right?

Not necessarily, we have done a upgrade with the UM2 head on a UMO with the original electronics.

You need to supply the electronics board with 24V, change out the linear regulator that supplies 12V to the arduino to a switched type that can take the higher voltage without getting too hot, and add a PT100 amplifier (E3D sells this one: http://e3d-online.com/PT100-Amplifier-Board) between the board and the PT100 sensor from the printhead.

What would you suggest for upgrading the print head to newer spec? I'm inquiring about the coupler, spacer, etc.
