Crappppp Ultimaker 2+ feeder

Looks like about 10 hours into this 14 hour print, the filament kinked.

This surprises me since it had a pretty smooth flow directly into the extruder.

I didn't have time to sort it out, just enough time to snap a photo so I can ask about this on the Ultimaker forum I see filament in the Bowden and I am hoping if I use the control panel to remove the material, out it will come.

My question now is...do I have an extruder setting problem or just a weird filament tangle that happened? I need to make a LOT of parts for my BB-8 and would like to think my feeder is reliable!

And the real sad thing is, there's no sensor to show when the filament isn't feeding. So the Ultimaker just kept on swirling around for hours. No way to save this print :(

Did you feed the filament directly into the feeder like this?

It should normally go over the black plastic part that you can see bottom right on this picture:

No such part came with my Ultimaker 2 or the 2+Extruder Upgrade kit.

Just a new spool holder

The Ultimaker people themselves guide the filament in a very similar way at trade shows: They just leave the yellow part away... ;-)

So I am not the first to be bit by the ghouls of filament binding....

It looks like the bearings mount to existing holes used to hold the shrouds in place?

I just need to source some of the metric parts here in the USA

Yes, most if not all of the solutions use existing mounting holes. Sometimes you need a longer screw or so.

That kind of shape looks like a partial entanglement of the filament.

Just ordered some 608zz bearings on Amazon, I think both or those should make a big difference.

I was asking Erin over to Fabrc8 if they've seen that happen before. I've had weird things happen when near the end of a spool, but this was 1/3 of the way into the Ultimaker Silver one

I printed Roberts bearing spool holder and produced some bearing filament guides to minimise friction when using flexable filaments, Roberts holder is great well worth printing.

I use that spool holder too and it's great, can definitely recommend it.

I use the standard spool holder most of the time, and always feed directly from the spool, never any problems like that with my 2+ machines.

Well IMO um2+ feeder sucks. No surprises there.

Anyhow since the print works on your umo it should work just the same on um2+

Just check that you print higher than umo (because um2 has a smaller hot zone so same temp will do more pressure = more stress on the feeder). Also for me at least on the um3 I need to set the feeder sprint to less than the middle. The feeder indicator (doesn't have a plus or minus) is, all way down maximum pressure, all the way up minimum. I set it to in between minimum and the middle.

Anyway if you want to print hard stuff umo or um2 feeder will never allow you to do thousands of retractions, for that is better a mk8 or a bondtech.

To solve entanglement no idea. Never got one since my first formfutura spool and until I used um3 where I had 6 with orange and black um filament.

You could do what cloakfiend does, cut the metters + bowden distance, and leave it hanging on the spool.
