What's this noise?

Do you mean the "beep beep"? That's just the feeder retracting. Just look at the back, you can see the stepper moving

I'm so used to the Ultimaker 2 being so quiet...I opened the bottom of the printer again, just to make sure I had the extruder motor in the ferrite core...it is. The first prints (included on the SD Card from Fabrc8) are going very, very nicely

It seems a shame to throw away the old print head and extruder

Sounds like you should upgrade to dual extrusion by using foehnsturm's tool changing system!

Well I'm looking forward to seeing how the 2+ does these many big 20+ hour BB-8 prints

If I could come up with some funds, I'd like to get another refurb UM2 and upgrade it...a small farm of Ultimakers would be nice. Maybe the U3 will bring the prices down further

The geared feeder certainly is more noisy than the original UM2-feeder.

Add one more feeder and a rather noisy fan and you get a feeling for how noisy the UM3 is, unfortunately.

I have something for you to print on that UM3...if you have PVA and don't mind a 20 hour print (BB-8's head...well 1/3 of it)

We will see when I get back home and when I get my UM3 back, it sounds like a nice test print though

Regarding the noise by the way, the UM3 is simply too noisy to use during night in my house but I found out some thing rather nice during beta testing:
If you pause the print on the UM3, it cools the cores and shuts all fans off, while keeping the bed warm!
It means one can safely pause the print and resume half a day later, I did that during several of the test prints and it worked great!

The only thing missing is the option to turn off the LEDs, and the printer still gives of some minor power supply noise so it is not completely silent.

Until they change the firmware you can add
M142 r[0-255] g[0-255] b[0-255] w[0-255]
at the gcode end

With the beta app we have you can actually send gcode not only stl, quite nice

Haha, I had to read the replies to figure out you were not trolling us. You should hear my UMO feeder retracting, although the mods did do a good job there. And then there is the bottom fan.....

You want MORE noise on a Ultimaker 2? Enable z-hop. Wow!

Noise of the z stage can be reduced by changing the 8/16 jumper on the Ultiboard 2.1 and adapting the firmware to the new number of steps per mm.
