Primer for new Ultimaker 3 users?

Post by LePaul »

Alright...pretty excited.

Preface...

I have a comic-con style event coming up at the end of May and I will have both R2-D2's on display, plus whatever I have done with BB-8

This year, I inquired with Utlimaker about having some Ultimaker printers on display.

Last year, I was overwhelmed with questions about 3D printing, how I used it in my projects and so on.

So, I figured this year, with the help of Ultimaker, we could have a few on display, so people could "see" 3D printers in action, making stuff!

I think so many people think of 3D printers and just printing trinkets and toys.

But, when they see the support pieces I have made inside of R2, for electronics mounts...and now I can replace heavy aluminum detail pieces with 3D printed ones...well, there's interest!

The real point!

Ultimaker/Fabrc8 is sending me 4 machines, two UM2+ and two UM3.

I haven't done a thing with the UM3's, asides see them in NYC at the grand reveal.

What would be some wise steps for someone just opening one up for the first time!

I really want to learn the printer inside and out, do some good prints and get the hang of this great machine.

Thanks

I think to get to grips with the dual printing with PVA material,
from what I've seen it takes a little bit of testing to get the right result.

no big deal, just follow the instructions, update to the last firmware and use the default settings.
Just take care of the PVA with humidity, store it in the right way.

I haven't seen anyone use the calibration sheet included in the printer. I went through YouTube and everything I saw there was pretty much the identical setup/start up as the UM2 has (minus dual print heads and wifi, of course)

When is that used (or needed?)

You should definitely print a calibration print and adjust the offset before doing anything else.
Apart from that, I would expect it to work okay with the latest firmware. PVA is tricky though as mentioned.
You will need a bit more patience with the UM3 by the way, certain things are really slow compared to the UM2. Booting up seems to take forever when one is used to the UM2 for example.

Yes, everyone I've chatted with who has one mentioned its a good printer...but very very slow

I am surprised I haven't seen any videos on the calibration sheet
