I don't know if UM resellers can sell umo/umo+ frame, but when UM did offer direct sales I was able to buy a full wood frame for 100€. Shafts etc are better at igus/misumi

true - in office, there is a shaft from an UM2 somewhere laying around - replaced when the upgrade kit has been mounted. It's whiggling when rolled over a glass plate...
Do youself a favor and order it at Mitsumi - if possible...

Aren't the frame drawings on Github or the like? Would it be practical to laser cut/water jet those locally out of wood /aluminum / whatever

If I were to put together another Ultimaker (as opposed to buying one) I would go for the aluminum extrusion frame clone one that is available on Thingiverse. It's based on the UM2 with just the original frame dropped and replaced by a frame.

Back in the day we used to sell the kits without the wooden parts. We had 2 reasons for that;
1. Most fab labs had a cutter anyway (or want to do weird material. I've even seen a 6mm stainless steel variant. You couldn't move it without help.
2. Australia doesn't let you ship wood without a fuck ton of paperwork.

Yes, Australia is huge into preserving their environment. They don't want anything invasive. When I went down there in 1998, if you had any food with you, into the trash it went.

My next machine will be made from 3mm stainless steel sheets. Why? Costs not much more than alu sheets but the printer's mass will very effectively dampen vibrations and even most of the shaking.
