Updating Stock HICTOP 3DP-11-ATL to Latest Marlin and Changing Bed Leveling Sensor

Post by kgrigio »

I have been going the rounds trying to get the stock HICTOP 3DP-11-ATL firmware upgraded to the latest marlin and am really struggling and am not seeing what I am doing wrong. To add in a twist, I am also replacing the stock inductive auto-bed leveling sensor with a mini differential IR sensor. That change over seems pretty straight forward, just invert the Z_MIN_ENDSTOP input, but my problem is going with the first change, from the stock firmware to the latest Marlin.

I have read through a lot of posts here and have tried taking some of the configuration.h files that I am finding here, but everytime I compile and upload to my printer, my LCD display is either blank or shows a bunch of garbage and I have to put the stock firmware back on.

What more do I have to change besides the configuration.h file?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hello:

I have Helped many with this upgrade, I have preformed upgrade to most of the Marlin 1.1.X firmware.

What version are you wanting to upgrade to. What are all the changes you have made.
Post your changes so far I will take a look an let you know what I have found.

State what you want on the finished firmware, Filament run out sensor, bed leveling ect....

There are two things that I am trying to do, first I am trying to update the stock HICTOP 3DP-11-ATL firmware, posted here
Marlin_3DP08-12-398_Original FW from HICTOP.rar
(190.29 KiB) Downloaded 892 times
to the latest Marlin that I got off GitHub here

https://github.com/MarlinFirmware/Marlin.git

I went through the two configuration.h files and tried to update as best as I could. Here is a copy of my configuration.h file
Configuration.h
(62.73 KiB) Downloaded 774 times
My printer has the stock HICTOP inductive auto-bed leveling sensor, found here

All I did was change the configuration.h file and everything compiled in Arduino 1.8.5 and I uploaded to my printer. After rebooting my printer after the firmware update, this is what I get on my display.
IMG_1070.jpg
IMG_1070.jpg (49.87 KiB) Viewed 27795 times
For now, all I want to do is get my stock firmware working in the latest marlin software.

After I get that working, I want to get my new IR differential sensor working to replace my inductive proximity sensor. The IR sensor information can be found here.

https://miscsolutions.wordpress.com/min ... sor-board/

and the information about what I need to do in the firmware to get it working was emailed to me by the seller of the sensor.

1. Connect the IR sensor in place of the previous proximity sensor - except that your old proximity sensor may have needed a 12V supply; whereas the IR sensor needs only 3.3V or 5V, which is available from the 3rd pin of the endstop connector on most controller electronics.

2. In the firmware for your controller electronics, make sure that the pullup resistor on the input that the sensor is connected is enabled. Then the LED on the sensor should flash twice a few seconds after power up. If it flashes 4 times, then the pullup resistor is not enabled.

3. The IR sensor produces an active high output. If your previous proximity sensor had an active low output (e.g. NPN inductive sensor), then you will need to invert the sense of the Z probe input, which is another firmware configuration setting.

4. Measure the trigger height and configure that value in your firmware.

I believe point 1 and 2 are already done because when I hook up the IR sensor in place of the place of the inductive sensor I see the two led flashes. The next step is to change invert the Z probe input. I think to do this I need to change the following in the configuration.h file

// Mechanical endstop with COM to ground and NC to Signal uses "false" here (most common setup).
#define X_MIN_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
#define Y_MIN_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
//#define Z_MIN_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
#define Z_MIN_ENDSTOP_INVERTING true // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
#define X_MAX_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
#define Y_MAX_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
#define Z_MAX_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the endstop.
//#define Z_MIN_PROBE_ENDSTOP_INVERTING false // set to true to invert the logic of the probe.
#define Z_MIN_PROBE_ENDSTOP_INVERTING true // set to true to invert the logic of the probe.

I can't test this theory however because I can't get past the first step of updating the firmware from the stock firmware to the latest marlin.

I hope this is all clear and explains the situation. Thanks for any help.

In reading through the following thread

viewtopic.php?f=51&t=189&start=105#p8551

I found firmware referenced by shocksofmighty that I downloaded and compiled. My printer appears to be working now. What version of Marlin is this firmware?

I will try using this base fireware to add in my differential IR sensor and see how it turns out.

Had to work late.

I see that you have not enabled the Display

This display has to be enabled to work the stock display for Hictop
//#define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_SMART_CONTROLLER

Will look deeper When Not so Tried.

I have Marlin 1.1.5 working On my machines If you want It.

Attached is Marlin-kgrigio this needs to me extracted to folder Marlin-kgrigio

It is setup for Bed Leveling, Baby Steps, Individual Axis menu Home.
Archived with 7-Zip
Marlin-kgrigio.7z
(462.67 KiB) Downloaded 714 times
Changed the name from Dave to kgrigio
Sent this to Dave in the UK said it worked perfect, but you should still proceed carefully with any firmware upgrade.
This is setup for a T8-8 (8mm pitch) lead screw though I have setups for All below
// Z Axis 3200, / 1.25mm pitch leadscrew = 200*16 /1.25 = 2560 :: (STEPS_PER_REVOLUTION_Z / PITCH_OF_Z_ROD)
// Z Axis 3200, / 2mm pitch leadscrew = 200*16 /2 = 1600 :: (STEPS_PER_REVOLUTION_Z / PITCH_OF_Z_ROD)
// Z Axis 3200, / 4mm pitch leadscrew = 200*16 /4 = 800 :: (STEPS_PER_REVOLUTION_Z / PITCH_OF_Z_ROD)
// Z Axis 3200, / 8mm pitch leadscrew = 200*16 /8 = 400 :: (STEPS_PER_REVOLUTION_Z / PITCH_OF_Z_ROD)

Have any questions just Post.

I was able to download your file and test it out with the stock inductive sensor. I made some tweaks to it based off the .rar file I got above, but in the end, it seems to be working just great. Thanks for the help. Now to play with getting my IR differential sensor working. Once I get it working with that sensor, I will come back and post my changes.

Where in the code is the definition around homing? I can't find what file the sequence is in. In my previous firmware, the homing went to x_min, then y_min, then z_min then to the center of the build plate. In the 1.1.5 version the z_min is done after centering the build plate. I am just curious where this sequence is located because I am not finding it, which leads to another question. Is there a way to do a search across all the files in the folder? I tried searching for homing in the configuration.h and configuration_adv.h files and didn't see the homing sequence, but to search every file one at a time would be nuts.

If you are using the zip file I posted
It appears that these lines have been Changed
Notes wrote: //#define Z_SAFE_HOMING

#if ENABLED(Z_SAFE_HOMING)

#define Z_SAFE_HOMING_Y_POINT Y10 // Y point for Z homing when homing all axis (G28).

Replace with the Original lines to restore the original Z safe Homing lines.
This will allow you to home center bed (Almost)

Thanks for all the help. I have spent a lot of time this week really diving into how the firmware works. I was able to get the firmware working with the stock inductive sensor and then installed the mini IR differential sensor. It took a bit of tuning and tweaking, but I love the IR sensor. It allows me to print over glass. I will copy my Configuration.h file below for reference. I had to print a mount for the sensor that I will be putting into thingyverse and will link to that in a bit.

The issue I am fighting with now is my bed leveling, which version to use and is it working the way it should, but I will start another thread on that.

 *
 * Parameters:
 *   P  Pattern
 *   S  Strokes / Repetitions

 *
 * Patterns:
 * P0 Straight line (default). This process requires a sponge type material
