HIC i3 - current firmware development information

Some have asked about my efforts to update the firmware for the HICTOP Reprap Prusa i3 printer, so will be posting the updates in this new thread instead of the older one. Thanks go out again to LePaul for creating this HIC i3 forum and now some new sub-forums.

Currently I'm running Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 from the github Marlin RC branch. You can find the source code here:

All I had to do was to sort through the <configuration.h> to set proper #defines and other data to work with the HIC i3. Instead of using the Arduino IDE to edit the code, I use the Atom code editor as have come to like the GUI and it's functions (I'm an old Emacs fan) and like to look/edit/compare the <configuration.h.orig> file at the same time I am working on the new <configuration.h> file. Observed the Marlin code developers have moved the LCD expansion definitions (auto expand) and control for the type of LCD control panel defined in <configuration.h> to => <conditionals.h>. So an edit also of <conditionals.h> is in order to ensure proper LCD operation.

Current firmware updates and bug fixes:
1) Edit the Default HIC i3 Configuration Files =COMPLETED V1.1.0-RC3 : completed initial testing after re-compile for heat, end-stops, home function, temperatures, etc. appear to be working correctly.

2) SD Card was not recognized /bug =FIXED : after attempts at re-formatting the SD card, banging my head on the table (it _used_ to work, if you power on the printer with the SD card installed), finally narrowed down what was causing it not to work. After debug, you can now actually insert and remove the SD card with the power on, get the 'Card inserted' and 'Card removed' message on the LCD, and printing from the card has been without issues. THAT was a main bug to fix!

3) EEPROM writing has been enabled /improvement=FIXED : The factory version did not have the option and you could not even write to the EEPROM form a host program over USB. Once you have your default parameters set, you can now store your data to the EEPROM using the host program or menu selection using the LCD control panel. This saves a lot of time as you can now power off the printer and next time you power it up, you no longer have to go edit all the default all over again. You do however still have the option of loading 'fail-safe' or factory options from the LCD panel.

4) Default Parameters Stored /improvement =COMPLETED : Have set some default accelerations and feed rates to a more acceptable level for the HIC i3. You can of course change these to match your own printer hardware capabilities.

5) LCD Rotary Control /improvement =COMPLETED : the control on the LCD panel was was too sensitive, it was hard to set proper values as on click would up increment/decrement the selected parameter around 4 units. That has been fixed. It may take some more knob rotations to get to a value such as moving an axis, but worth it.

6) Main menu /improvement =COMPLETED : on boot the LCD screen will show a Marlin splash screen and then a current firmware version screen prior to the main screen menu. Main screen menu now reads "HICi3 Mendel Ready.". May add firmware version there until the code is finalized.

Current firmware status:
It appears so far to be working so far with no major issues found.

That's about all for now, will be updating as the code is further tested and 'finalized'.

Instructions how to use the new firmware to follow: how to properly configure the source code, re-compile and flash your own firmware. Of note, if interested in this firmware remember it's still in BETA and based on a RC fork. MAKE SURE you understand this code is NOT fully tested and you take the responsibility if you use this code on your own machine. I will not be responsible for any issues on your end! If you do not know what your doing... then don't do it. <g>

Still beta, as found some minor issues.

And to boot, prints have changed big time since OEM firmware, in a nutshell extruder is not putting out the same amount of plastic =under extruded.

Back to basic hardware and printer calibrations. Got to love this stuff!

Update: Looks like a printer problem, possibly a clogged nozzle and will be first time TS on this type of issue and just happened to have bad prints in the middle of a software update. I thought maybe is was something I did in the source code or the actual source code itself. Noticed in the configuration.h file the definitions for the type of thermistor varied between the 'China' supplied source code to the lasted HICTOP configuration.h examples off the net.firmware .

Firmware notes:
1) 'China' supplied OEM source code = hacked and would not even compile
2) configure Marlin 1.0.2x - latest stable release, compiled and worked fine
3) configure Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 (RC4 just got released yesterday) - RC version actually worked at first, but then started having the print issue
4) re-flash back to Marlin 1.0.2x - same print issue

Seems to appear *not* to be software related, thank the maker. I'm thinking it's a clogged nozzle or extruder issue. Here is a picture of the test cubes, 25mmx25xmm100mm printed at new default speeds, 1 perimeter, no top/bottom. Only on my 2nd roll of filament with this printer and will have to perform an extrusion test again to check.

The first test cube on the left were printed the same, with Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 = flow stopped abruptly at 190c with 10mm z-axis stepping between temp change, starting out at 210c for all (210, 205, 200, 195, 190 to top...). The middle was same, except re-defined the thermistor type in cofiguration.h back to ='1', was ='3' and had no change. The one on the right was printed last same settings with 1.0.2x = stopped flow abruptly now at 200c. Previous test cubes went all the way to 100mm height, from 210c start to 180c end.

Very interesting, thought for sure the thermistor type definition was the problem, obviously not. Debug to come soon as I can get back home and iron it out. Comments welcome!

worth checking out the feeder. The impression that the filament is grinded, and because of this insufficient amount of plastic out of the nozzle.

I agreee. This is to be expected behaviour as the temp goes down! The stronger the feeder, the longer it will extrude plastic. If you hear the feeder skip, it might be worth adjusting the steppers current a bit (but I still think that your results are ok). If grinding is the problem, you might want to adjust the pressure of the feeder clamping system a bit... but still. You would want to print pla at around 200 / 210 anyway, right?

With just a 5 degree decrease in nozzle temp, you could see on the failed cube it just quit feeding. Interesting though, it was actually feeding some plastic as shown however very little.

A previously OEM firmware printed test cube, as low a temp as I dared to go fearing extruder damage. The test cube from 210c at bottom all the way down to 170c at top. You cannot tell in this particular image, but the perimeter definitely started thinning out around 180-170c. The current roll of PLA filament is print rated at 190-220c. Still new at all this (only my second roll of filament) and learn every time I use it, and with the help from you folks. Sill playing with calibration of E-step and temp, it makes sense that both are related along with filament diameter and batch, etc.

Bug in Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 (16.03.25-B1)

Notice on the LCD when during an active SD print and you go to: Tune->Nozzle (or Bed or Fan options) the LCD will display "Flow: 100" instead of previous firmware of selecting individual Nozzle, Bed or Fan options. While "'Flow: 100" is indicated and changeable, when you press the selector it just stays on that menu until the normal LCD menu time-out and then returns back to info screen. The Control->Temp-> <options> still work.

Managed to re-set the HIC i3 PID value defaults in the firmware.

Found original code in 'configuration.h' defined PID default values as (Ultimaker's will like this):

Just purchased the HICTOP Prusa i3 with Auto-leveling and I'm new to 3D Printers. I'm planning to add a dual extruder, but would like to keep the auto-leveling. I've been reading up on the firmware for this printer. It looks like you have done a lot of digging into this. Thank you for your hard work.

I'd like to know if the Marlin Code supports Auto-leveling?

Yes, however Marlin 1.1.0-RC3 has auto-leveling (probing type) and is disabled by default; if you read the guide on reprap.org they do not suggest it and I have not tired to enable it. My HIC i3 came with a inductive z-probe and helped a lot for auto-z homing position, I believe this is what 'China' refers to as 'auto leveling' on this model. The code will of course support dual extruders as it is the latest version. I'm getting the full graphics controller and true lead-screw z rods for my HIC i3 and will be updating the software configuration to add those.

Thanks for the comment, if you would like my current code (actually just a few edited configuration files from the git hub supplied Marlin 1.1.0-RC3) let me know your email and I will send it to you. It has no major issues that I can see so far after running it for about a week. Do NOT use China OEM supplied source code, it's been hacked.

Thanks for the quick response. I've got to assemble it and get it working right before working on dual extrusion. Hopefully, I'll have get it done this weekend.

Also, to start when assembling the HIC i3 make sure you:
1) use at least 12AWG wire between your power supply and the control board (you should purchase a larger PSU, 30 amp version or will get serious voltage sag)
2) let me know if you can read your SD card with supplied firmware, good luck. Fixed in new code.
3) lower your feed-rates, defaults are too fast for this printer. Fixed in new code.
4) add a 60x60mm cooling fan to your X-axis motor, you will need that.
5) make sure *everything* mechanical and frame is square and fasteners tight to start (a square, 12" caliper, large ruler in mm's...), belts aligned and tight, etc.
6) China .pdf assembly manual is horrible, any questions let me know. If you are a logical type, you will figure it out.

Will be creating an HIC i3 assembly thread, it's a great kit if you are a engineering type or built erector sets with no instructions when you were a kid. <G>
