Automatic smoke/fire detector

Post by Xeno » January 2nd, 2017, 7:36 am

I am in the process of making a new bigger printer, but now will have a very big heated bed, I am a bit more concerned about fire hazards,
I did come across a few automatic fire extinguishers and smoke detector attached to the power outlet, but the extinguishers go off at a low temperature, and the auto power cut-off is no longer being made (Kickstarter)

I do a lot of printing at night, this saves a lot of time, and my new printer is going to be really big, and makes printing times even longer :)
I thought about a pause option, but that would also have to cut off the heated bed, and the object might come loose from the build plate.

anybody got some great ideas ?

There is smoke detectors with mains relay outputs that can be used to turn off the printer when it detects smoke. I have been thinking about installing one of those in combination with a automatic fire extinguisher in the 3D printer room at our makerspace, since we soon will have 7 printers in there running day and night for most hours of the week.

It's a real challenge to find a printer that can do these larger prints (think the size of an R2-D2 dome)

The dimensions of the gcreate and the Raise3D are ideal but I really question these printers design and reliability. The gcreate is open and exposed and the Raise3D lacks some basics such as a good feeder and fan control on the print head.

If Ultimaker increases their size a bit more, that would be a really great thing!

I'm looking forward to see what you come up with!

I bought the Folger Tech FT-5 and will enlarge it a bit more :)
this is a $500,- printer that has some great capabilities

the kit is 30x30x40cm build size, but I will enlarge it to 40x30x50cm

from another forum somebody had a link with info, there I found the BlazeCut Automatic Fire Suppression, this is a pressurized tube with fire suppressant, that will burst with a fire, ingenious :)

[edit 2]
I still have a mold for the R2 dome, no need to print it,and a cnc machine that can do skins in one go 8-)
