Standalone solution. Think UMO, but instead of printing it scans. We got in a pretty late stage of the development, but then it was cancelled.ivan.akapulko wrote:Whoa... Um scanner? As a part of printer or standalone solution?

So sad... I look before at bq's cyclop, but it looks most like a toy, not a tool. Any chance to continue scaner's r&d in future?

I have a BQ Ciclop at home but it currently sits in a corner as the initial results where not very good. The Ciclop seems to have issues with very dark scan objects - at least mine had. Once I have more time, I will give it another try with latest firmware and scanning software.

If you have 'a few' Raspberry Pi's, you can try this...

100 is "a few"? Interesting, if use just 10 of it on a vertical stand, and rotate object at 360 degrees can it take similar result?

Re: Nudee: One bridge too far?
Yes, if the subject does not move
Here he can fire the 100 Pi's at the same time.
A friend of mine is offering the same service with a simple setup: a rotating stand and kinect scanner. It the subject don't move it is very effective.
On a smaller scale and only with objects I do it by taking pictures as well. I have an Arduino which rotate the stand and takes a picture every X degrees, then I move the camera and do another round. It gives very good results (that's how I scanned the bear)

What is a cost of kinect stand?

I remember, previously on a umforum couple of users told kinect is a not good solution. Something like 3dsystems hand scanner

Yes, you can find easily tutorial on how to scan with a Kinect. Price tag is I think around 100€, but you can find them for much less than that on the Bay.

Re: Nudee: One bridge too far?
I have a Microsoft Windows Kinect and I'm really not sure what to do with it.
I got it rather inexpensively using a student discount. My thought was I could place this inside of R2-D2 and use it for some basic level of navigation. The opening between the dome and utility arms looked promising since that area is open.
But that is a narrow opening. And to make things a bit more complicated, as things always are with R2, the droid is tilted back 17 degrees.
So the area the Kinect could "see" was quickly getting smaller and smaller.
I still have it, plus some additional ultra sonic sensors that could be hidden around the droid for actual navigation.
With a droid like this, you are struggling to be "screen accurate" and not have any gizmos showing.

I'm working on the scanner on my own time now (together with some colleagues of mine). With a lot of luck it might ever see the day of light.
I don't think that Ultimaker will let me form a spin-off company for the scanner though. Might be able to convince them to throw all the research we made into public domain.

Harma from Ultimaker actually talked about the scanner project almost exactly a year ago on the 3DVerkstan "3D Print Meetup 2015" in Stockholmivan.akapulko wrote:Whoa... Um scanner? As a part of printer or standalone solution?

I suspected that it was cancelled since there were no news about it since then, but it would be really interesting to know more about what has been done
As I can remember, the prototype had the wooden look of an UMO and appeared to be roughly the size of a Filastruder

Off-Off-Topic here but that meetup might be a good excuse for me to go to Stockholm

Not the same one, but since we just moved into a new much larger space with 3DVerkstan, wich includes our own 100m2 meetup space, we will surely be hosting some interesting 3d meetups in the future
