I've been busy looking into ethereum mining, but before I could get it all to work the profability went down :P

Did my first steps with TIG-welding this weekend! It didn't work out yet (just melted and burned steel), but I'm still alive and the equipment is ok, too. So far, so good :)

Lazy question...with only a mesh-file available (e.g. STL)...how can one turn it into a solid that you can, kind of, modify? I have tried to find ways to do it in Fusion360 but so far I have not been able to do it.

If the model is not too complex, I would make some slices and redraw the shape,
there are options to turn a mesh into a solid, but every triangle on your mesh will become a surface, and can make a very large file and would be difficult to edit.
there are specialized software packages for 3D scanning, to turn a mesh (scan) into surfaces and into a solid, combining triangles in the same surface plane, but still requires and lot of work, and costs a bundle :)

Figured so...I noticed too that when I imported the STL's everything is just a whole lotta' triangles.

I have already recreated some of the parts and made the changes I needed. Some parts though was kind of complicated so I was hoping to avoid having to remake them since I'm still a rookie I Fusion360 :P

But I'm getting better every day 🙃

(nay to "open" projects that only shares STL's)

You can edit .stl's directly using MeshMixer, but it's more of a sculpting tool than e.g. fusion's parametric design. If you only need to change the looks Meshmixer can do the job but if you require some exact measurements then you're probably better off making them yourself.

I looked at Meshmixer once but could not really "get it". And what i'm modifying is design parts so it would not be suitable here.

Almost got the first part done in Fusion360 now...and i'm starting to "get" how it works...with timeline and features. An experienced user would probably laugh at my timeline...I almost do...but I managed to design the part :P (and next part will be easier to create :) ).

Would be interesting to see how a professional would go about designing a car or a toy consisting of multiple parts in Fusion360. I think I need to go looking for some good screencasts :)

The only downside to this approach (since the original sources are not made available) is that I have to go through all the hassle of fine tuning my part so that it fits with the adjacent parts created by the original designer. But for this part...I reused the crappy/snappy Ultimaker filament they bundled with the printer to make some testprints (thanks to #gudoZGE).

Off to holidays! Going to a number of LARP events, so if you don't hear a lot from me the next two weeks, it's because i'm dressing up in a field and hitting people with latex objects.

No 3D printed battle axe? (Or other props) Sounds like fun!

Why would I want a 3D printed version of my wife? Waste of good filament.

:P

Wassup guys.
Haven't been around for a while, life has taken a bit of a turn lately and haven't been able to spend any time on the printer and other things in general.

Anyway. Spent an entire day yesterday upgrading my Prusa i3 MK2 to an MK2S-MM.
I know a number of you guys would like to know more about it, so I posted my initial findings in the applicable topic.

Btw, replacing a PEI sheet is messy!
