Spammers beware

Post by Xeno »

Just got over from the UM forum :)

I just want to give a warning (that may have been addressed already)
and just like every new forum, you will probably be overrun with spam very soon, I see it happen to all new forums, and the new UM forum was no exception :)

I hope you have already dealt with possible spammers invasion, and keep a real good eye out, this is something that can ruin a new forum very quickly 8-)
especially the easy way to make an account here ;-)

Yes, that's why the forum style and such are largely stock so updates and enhancements can go right in....without worry of breaking mods.

Forum style could be quite a lot nicer styled tough with mostly css, without any large risk of breaking with updates :-)

I thought about that....but this version of phpBB is new (3.1.x) so most of the themes there are older. I have been monitoring the new approved ones a few times a week.

Of course, if you have suggestions on a particular color or theme...let me know.

First spammer is in the house

Can't we you to a more strict registration process?

E.g.
- 'First X posts need to be moderated' -- I appreciate it is a pain for new members to wait for their posts being reviewed, but it is one of the most effective way. Captchas are helpings well, but from my experience are not enough to hold the fort
- Also newly registered users shouldn't be able to send PMs, another plague is people who just register ans start sending SPAM PMS...

I really hate to say, I told you so, but ........

And make sure you delete all accounts that were created and have not posted anything, these could be posting spam in the next weeks/months

As said by the Neotko and Amedee, your follow-the-sun moderation concept needs staff ;-)

I have no idea but does it have a button like 'kill user' or 'kill post' or 'unblock newuser post'?
