Yep, very strange is it not? The file size cannot be the issue. FYI: the first file is the virgin version direct from my LG G3 phone download, I wonder... hmm... Try say, changing the color or britghtness on that file, re-save it under a new name and try uploading that. Maybe for some reason the original phone file is 'tainted' some how. Again, uploaded phone files directly to other sites with no issues. Very curious indeed...

Had the same issue with a large image lately, even thought it was well below 5 MB.
It was not a huge issue really, just downscaled it to be able to post it.

But anyway, here is the original (5712x5805 pixels, 3.5 Mb) in case you want to try:

I am using Opera by the way, which is for sure not the most common browser.

Looks like a few other phpBB guys note this anomaly too. I'm still working on it

It looks like it is really file specific, I can reproduce with Anders' testcase while I can upload all my other files, even bigger ones...

So here is the story:
snap045.png
The file is uploaded in chunks and the browser expects a JSON reply. But with Anders' file, the response to the second chunk is empty, and the javascript (in the browser) crashes with a TypeError.

So the problem occurs on the server side while processing the chunk. So either the client is not sending what the server expects or the server can't handle it properly. But I'm afraid there is some exception handling masking the error o the server side because the server returns a '200' which means success :-(

@LePaul, aren't there any error reporting log files available?

Let me share that with the phpBB support people...that clue might help!

I wonder if the time needs to be extended?

Resource Limits max_execution_time Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds 120
Resource Limits max_input_time Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data 60

No, the error comes much faster than that.
If we run into a limit it would rather be memory.

But then again phpBB or php would bark, here we just have nothing.

I haven't touched phpBB code since ages, but I am pretty sure there is debug option somewhere so that it is more verbose when bad things happens. It is normally turned of by default on production site as nobody wants to see php errors/warning on their board ;)

I'm awaiting some response to my post over there. We have ample resources, I just upped our server from 512 mb to 2048 mb, and one CPU to two CPUs.

Yes but there is also a 'memory_limit' php parameter which set a 'per process' limit.

Let me take your suggestion to phpBB

Software is really not my expertise, so I am afraid I can not help much, but I just recalled that the picture I uploaded is merged from four (microscope) images, if that might make any difference?
With my limited knowledge in software it feels like it should be irrelevant, but just thought it is worth mentioning :)

I'm curious how it works on the phpBB support forum and not here. It's not a huge deal to me. Actually lowering the value to 2 mb is probably wiser since 5 mb is large. But I wanted pdf and other files to fit ok

5mb these days... is not large. But if your running your own server, well that will add up for sure.

I purchase a Nikon D610 DSLR that also does HD video also have GoPro's, sUAS(drone), etc. I thought a couple of 2Tb drives would be fine for primary and backups - wrong!

2mb is nothing... I have almost stopped uploading photos to forums with limits of 5mb or pixel limits of 5000px or less, since that would require me to take photos from my mobile photos trough a resizing software.

My phone takes pictures of about ~5mb in size and ~5300px wide... So for me a 5mb limit disqualifies about 1/3rd of the pictures taken with my phone.

I would be ok with a server-side plugin resizing my large pictures to a smaller size tough if it is disk space you are worried about.

Paul, FYI :I tried uploading a re-sized 1024x768 photo that used to work. Now I am getting the same error as the original file prior to re-sizing.

Also, looks like some are starting to post in the HICTOP forum area, just wish I could post pictures. Is not running a forum fun?
