Actually, I have this kind of issue quite frequently, and get round the problem by creating my own support just where I need them. It's a lot more work, but if you make sure you have a single layer gap between your support and the piece, you can really good results. The image show what I use to support a 2mm overhang. They snap off really easily after printing.

What slicing program are you using, S3D? I use Cura and Slic3r, but those supports I mentioned were modelled in Blender.
