Measure in STL files

Post by reibuehl »

Every time I need modify 3D models where I only have STL files, I find it extremely difficult to "measure" stuff like distances and angles. If I import the STL in Fusion 360, I can use Inspect but it does not really "snap" to the right places and so I get very unreliable measurements. Is there a tool that could be used to measure things like distance between two faces, length of an edge, angle between two edges easier? What Do you use for such tasks?

I know it can be done in Blender, not sure what else exists. You'll have to google how to do it though, as I am still learning Blender and haven't done much around my printer in a few months (camping, etc).

I have downloaded the free for home use version of Autodesk Netfabb and it's measuring capabilities seem to be what I need. They could be a little bit more intuitive, but I think that goes for the whole Netfabb ;-)

Hi guys,

For measurement or redesigning of STL parts, I usually use Rhinoseros for adjusting/ measuring mixing, and corecting 3D files.
It has a nice interface and great compatibility with STL files.
You should learn it a bit, but after that it is really easy to use.
You can just use "distance" command, and click on edges or points (or soom in a bit) to very accuratelly obtain distances.

However it isn't free, so that's kind of a bummer, but perhaps for those of you who who are student, or have connections, i would recommend it;)

Is there a trial version to test it out?

I noticed in Cura there is a Measure plug-in that works well
