Any ideas how to make this a bit cleaner in S3D?

Horizontal expansion -0.10 that will make the hole text look better, you need to make the texts assuming that pla expands 0.10 otherwise it won't look ok. Also, that's the hardest thing to make look good.

Also, deactivate 'Only retract while crossing open spaces'. But for that you need a feeder that doesn't chew material.
