would it help if you upped the 'skirt/brim minimum length'? it is now set to 250 mm

Actually that's the default value I use.
It doesn't help

Late to the party... :P
FYI I have this issue on my UMO+ also. If I start a new print after the first one then I always need to manually prime the nozzle otherwise the first layer will be crap :(

Are you using stock firmware or an alternative?

I'm running Amedee's firmware since I need features not present in the stock firmware.

Looking at the start/end codes in Cura 15.04 I think the issue is there...at the end it retracts 6mm...but the start only extrudes 3mm. Will play with that and see if I can fix the issue.

Cura 2.4 seems to be better...it retracts 6mm...and extrudes 6mm...so apart from any filament that might have oozed out of the nozzle it should not need any manual priming...at least it should not take that long before the filament comes out again. But I have not used 2.4 so much as I don't like all the speed tweaks it uses and I have not had time to sit down and adjust it to my liking yet.

Anyway...for me it's no biggie...I am already used to manually prime before printing :P and with the stock extruder on the UMO+ it is soo easy to do :)

I use Tinkergnome firmware on my UM2 and I saw when trying to prime manually, that the first time I use the "move material" function, the feeder stepper motor does not move. Only if I unselect the move mode and reselect it again, the feeder starts. I was wondering if this is also what happens when starting a print, e.g. that the first feeder motor "turn-on" command gets somehow swallowed. Forgive my un-scientific expressions here :-)
Maybe I should create a video of it...
