ColorFabb XT-CF20 Carbon Fiber Filament

Post by LePaul »

Okay I just ordered my first roll and a hardened nozzle (0.40) from PrintedSolid.com

Anyone use XT-CF20 on an Ultimaker Original?

Any tips, suggestions?

The info from Nicolinux on um forum should work just fine. Now that you have the heated bed you essentially have a um2 (worse fan cooling, worse pulleys, more wood vibration) but essentially the same.

Well he went through a variety of issues and I really didn't see a "final" fix.

I know he mentioned fans off, which really surprised me

I don't use fans also for formfutura carbonfill. Also, for the first layer it use to need a bit more height than normal to avoid having the nozzle full of dirt. If you use fans the nozzle scraches the print easy and drags material. I used very little colorfabb xt, but I preffer formfutura because some stuff I'm trying to do...

Indeed. The flow of carbon it's like cement. It has weight on it. But also, with normal speeds and increased flow on bridges, it can print quite amazing stuff. For small layer heights it get tricky to control imo.

Forgot to add. Bridges fan it's on, it's an option on s3d that allows to control the flow and fans for bridges. Quite useful. (Also allows to set a print slowdown if needed for that).

Share your profile screen by screen on the simplify3d and I'll try to debug it. I did that for many via pm on umo forum, it takes time, but it's quite easy when you remember that you have a gazillion options to change (if you need).

I haven't tested XF-CF20 much myself, but my experience so far would be that it is an interesting but slightly tricky material.
You can potentially get really nice surfaces but the molten plastic it is a bit "sticky" somehow which can cause defects like stringing and dripping quite easily.
I was printing at 250 C with glue stick and the the bed at 70 C and the fans at auto (up to 100%).
This is probably not the optimal setting though.

XT-CF20 will eat your brass nozzles at a rate of approximately 3 per spool.
The super hard nozzle is really suitable for this, I hope I can send one to you soon.

Hey I'd be happy to receive one! So long as it'll fit the Ultimaker Original.

I've been reading the experience of others...looks challenging. Yet the remarks on the ColorFabb site seem to indicate it went easy. (That never happens to me!)

Lepaul start printing the anders olsson nozzle torque wrench, its really nice to not overdo the nozzles. And yes, any e3d m6 size kind of nozzle fits perfect on umo.

https://www.youmagine.com/designs/nozzle-torque-wrench

The only m6 that doesn't work are the m6 for makerbot (they are shorter and they can fit but messing the hot area too close to the peek..)

Will do! Thank you for that.

I still want to print fan shrouds than can tolerate the print head temp! I wonder if i should adhere some thin aluminum sheet ...or would that shielding just melt the plastic?

Also, I am hoping this filament plays nice with 0.40 I know I read someplace that 0.50 or higher was better
