Ultimaker Software News, Cura 3, Cura Connect etc.

Ultimaker just announced some stuff at TCT, including Ultimaker Cura 3.0, integrations with SolidWorks and Siemens NX, a new Print Management solution called "Cura Connect" for Ultimaker 3 and more.

I'll also guess that this is the reason we saw the code relicensing for Cura this summer, to enable the possibility of closed-source plugins for third party integrations.

"Updated interface. You’ll notice a clearer look and feel, plus choosing your settings is now more intuitive"

That sounds promising at least since the current way was/is a nightmare.

Interesting...I just don't use Cura that much lately, I really need to be able to manually place supports for my prints lately

Me neither, but Simplify3D needs competition...and one day I might switch (living on hope) 🙂

It's mostly the recommended mode that changed. It's nothing that will have a big impact on expert users.

All the extra plugins have little to nothing to do with the re-licence. The solidworks plugin for instance is AGPL. The whole re-licence is just to take the fear of third party developers away.

Interestingly enough; The whole plugin system isn't new at all. It's been there from the start.

I still use v15.04.06 for 99% of the prints. The new Cura 2.* just reminds me too much the "new" UM forum - poshy, shiny and useless. Probably made by the same UI bugmakers.
Sorry, @nallath, just couldn't hold myself.

I still use v15.04.06 for 80% of my prints. Though the percentages of Prints I do use Cura 2.X for are increasing daily.
Still I like the Pronterface interface. Use several other slicers as each has a uniqueness about them for my use.

MatterControl
MeshLab
Netfabb
Repetier Host
Slic3r

And I will include Cura 3 into my slicers when it is released in November.

I just want to know when Cura will allow the user to select where supports are placed. That's been needed for a long, long time. Many times I can't use Cura since it will place supports in bad locations.

Why don't you design your parts already with the supports?

Because the parts I print are already designed by others.

I mean, really, what the heck kind of response is that? ?

How many people design the pieces they print? 1%? 2%?

Cura is famous for abysmal supports.

I'm not a big fan of the UI that we have now. But both of them are completely seperate teams. What does seem to be the trend (in most software companies, not just UM) is to have way more designers than resources to build it. This can lead to a difference in how shiny it looks compared to how well it works (If it pretends to work at a certain level, it should).

This too would be my Number one wish for Cura would be to add supports where I need them only.
As we know exactly what are 3D Printers are capable of doing and where it need help with supports.

Yes, I see that a lot with the projects I am involved at work.

A lot of ideas and such....but they don't have enough people to actually BUILD it

Cura can do this since eh 2.6? Maybe even before, not quite sure. Granted, the interface is not that great, but it's there (Check out the anti-overhang meshes).

Cura is (in)famous for a lot of things, quite a few have been true at some point in time. I notice that most people form an opinion and never revisit that (I myself do the same, as i still hate Node.JS, even though my last experience with it was years ago)
