That's a good point It could also be that the better layers are when the fan is on

It sounds like a broken wire with the thermosistor wire. You could check with a multimeter

Have you gone to the Teaching Tech Calibration site to dial in the esteps and the slicer flow settings?

If this is your first machine, I would suggest learning how to use it stock before diving into upgrades.
