Re: STL Preview Thumbnails

The thumbnails did not work in one of my virtual machines, and I finally found the bug and fixed it in the latest update. I recommend everyone with similar problems tries it! https://papas-best.com/stlthumbnails_en A registry key for MIME types was missing. And just so you know, the STL Viewer’s Win...

Re: STL Preview Thumbnails

EnableLUA exists on system, and it is 0 Wow, that’s bad for me. The behavior on the other system was: Thumbnails didn’t work. Triple-checked all registry keys etc. User turned UAC on. Thumbnails started working. User turned UAC off. Thumbnails stopped working. According to Process Monitor, the HKEY...

Re: STL Preview Thumbnails

I have UAC turned off in Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro have never had any problems. Very useful insight! Could you please check whether HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableLUA exists on your system, and if so, whether it is 0 or 1? The problems on on...

Re: STL Preview Thumbnails

I just found out that there’s problems with the thumbnails if UAC is disabled. If anyone has UAC off and doesn’t see any thumbnails, drop me a note and we’ll work it out. I’m looking into a fix.

STL Preview Thumbnails

I have a hard time remembering file names, so I wrote a shell extension to display STL models right in the file icon in Windows File Explorer. It proved very useful to me; if you want to give it a try: https://papas-best.com/stlthumbnails_en Feedback is always welcome! https://papas-best.com/stlthum...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

I released a new stable version. It fixes many pitfalls from the old versions, and comes with a few enhancements ... https://papas-best.com/stlthumbnails_en https://papas-best.com/stlthumbnails.png LePaul, you can try installing the new version - maybe it helps with your problems. Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

No, uninstall a working version, then install it again. Then try to get the thumbnails to work. I still cant I just tried that, and it works for me. The virtual machine I used for testing is limited to the 32-bit versions, though. If you have trouble checking the registry values, you can just expor...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

Haha, great :)

I tried to reproduce your issues by installing the old version to a virtual machine, and installing the new version over it. I could not find any issues, though – everything worked fine. I’ll keep digging …

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

I’m really interested in getting it to work on your system, because once fixed, more users can profit from it. My experience is, if there’s a problem with the program, not even one out of ten affected users will report it, so it’s important for me to not let you go :D I don’t think admin rights have...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

If you want to install for all users, you can launch a command window type msiexec /i <your path to Papas Best STL Viewer.msi> MSIINSTALLPERUSER=0 hit enter … you’ll notice the setup needs elevation and installs to the global program files folder; it should then be accessable for every user. This ha...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

Ooops, I missed that question! The blue popup is Windows SmartScreen, and it’s “reputation-based” – i.e. Windows 10 reports to the Microsoft servers how often users run programs, and if there’s been less than maybe a few hundred users for a certain program so far, it’s categorized as potentially har...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

Sorry to hear that … let’s check this: Did you install the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version? If you run regedit , is there an entry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.stl\ShellEx\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96} with the (Default) value {2E2F83C0-00D8-4504-B84A-31D6A29BFD80} ? Is there an entry HKEY_CLASS...

Re: I wrote a bloat-free STL viewer

Just saying that my programs got a small update that fixes some minor problems and the viewer now remembers whether it was maximized the last time you used it.

@LePaul , thanks for the quick mentioning yesterday :)
